Our Old-Fashioned Heavy Duty Hinges are our best-selling hinge! These hinges utilize a traditional design originating back in the 1800’s, are incredibly strong and are available in a wide range of sizes.
A carriage bolt is required for each hinge. Hinge sizes 7” to 16” require 3/8” dia. bolts and 18” to 36” require ½” dia. bolts. These are not included with the hinge pairs because the length of bolt needed will vary with each installation. Order bolts 1” longer than the overall thickness of your gate or door. Please refer to the Related Products below.

- What Size Hinge to Use? The general rule is that a hinge strap should be about 1/4 to 1/3 the width of the gate or door. If the gate or door is over 6’ tall, then a third hinge should be utilized (typically one hinge for every 3’ of height).
- Flush mounting is the most common method of installation. The hinge is mounted directly onto the face of the gate and post. We recommend a minimum 1/4” space be maintained between the gate and post to allow for expansion of the wood in changing seasons.
- Jamb mounting requires the cast iron cups be mounted on the side of the post. The recommended spacing between the gate and post varies depending on the hinge length utilized and how it is applied to the gate. Please refer to our Installation Details for more information.
